At Rising Tide, we will explore the people, the stories, the issues, and the programs that comprise the economic landscape for women in our community. Whether you are interested in youth, families, health, community development, employment, or social justice, come learn what’s happening related to economic empowerment programming for women – and the support of that programming – from an array of local experts.
Nearly six in ten poor adults are women. Ongoing employment discrimination and greater responsibilities for unpaid caregiving mean women are more likely than men to be poor at all stages of life. Families depend on women’s wages more than ever, but women represent nearly two-thirds of minimum wage workers – and full-time, year-round work at the federal minimum wage leaves a woman with two children thousands of dollars below the poverty line. The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act was signed into law in 2009, yet the typical woman working full-time, year-round is still paid less than the typical man working full-time, year-round. Recent reports reveal Ohio women make 76.9¢ for every $1 a man makes, ranking our state 33rd for closing the wage gap.
