Calling All Crows is hitting the road with Chadwick Stokes and the Forced to Flee Tour
There are 51.2 million forcibly displaced people in the world. Approximately 16 million of these people are refugees who have fled their home countries and 80% are women and children. The conflict in Syria alone has driven over 10 million people from their homes, with 3 million of them fleeing to neighboring countries. It is the largest humanitarian crisis in the world. Calling All Crows is partnering with Chadwick Stokes on the Forced to Flee tour and is dedicated to raising awareness about this community by providing opportunities for action in each city.
The US welcomes more displaced people than any other country, and has agencies supporting refugees in all 50 states. During this tour we are partnering with these organizations who provide much needed services to those who have been forced to flee. You can help support the community in your area by participating in our service project with US Together, Inc (UST).
UST was founded in 2003 in response to the growing needs of refugees and immigrants in central Ohio. UST is a mutual assistance agency, which means it was started and is still run by former refugees. The agency’s founders have worked with immigrant and refugee populations since 1988. UST is also a member of the Refugee Service Collaborative of Greater Cleveland, a group of Cleveland organizations that have joined together to better serve the rising numbers of refugees, resettling in Northeast Ohio. It includes the three Cuyahoga County refugee resettlement agencies and area school systems, healthcare providers, and community, and faith-based organizations.
Initially providing services to Russian speaking populations, UST began resettling diverse refugee populations in 2005 including individuals from the Former Soviet Union, Iran, Iraq, Burma, Bhutan, Eritrea, Somalia, Congo, Sudan, Burundi and Rwanda in Columbus.
Participants will assist UST staff with a number of activities, including preparing baskets and prizes for an upcoming spring picnic, assist refugees in filling out job applications in the computer lab, or practice reading with children. UST is also accepting donations and is in particular need of pre-loaded bus passes, household cleaning products, toiletries such as feminine products, and diapers, baby wipes etc.
Please note that the time is subject to change due to tour schedules and updates. Participants will receive a confirmation and final reminder at least one week before the event. A $10 registration will hold your spot, help to cover the cost of any supplies, support Forced to Flee and contribute to a monetary donation to the local partnering organization.
